New works by established and emerging contemporary Canadian artists added to Canada Council Art Bank

Ottawa, June 20, 2011 – The Canada Council Art Bank is acquiring 52 new works by Canadian artists, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and drawings, worth a total value of $303,025. The selection committee chose the works from 1,875 submissions received.

The Art Bank purchases include works from all regions of Canada. The new selections of works by senior artists Liz Magor, Jeff Thomas, Joanne Tod, and Serge Tousignant are complimented by works by emerging artists who are already receiving major recognition like David Harper, Meryl McMaster, Aidan Urquhart and Anna Williams. Images of these artists’ work can be downloaded from the Canada Council image gallery.

“The jury, faced with a large number of submissions, remained at the same time open minded and highly critical of each and every choice,” said Art Bank Director Victoria Henry. “The 2011 Art Bank purchase encompasses a broad spectrum of contemporary artistic practice in Canada today.”

The works were selected on the basis of artistic excellence, significance to current art practice and suitability for rental. Regional representation and cultural diversity were also considered. A full list is attached.

The members of the acquisition committee were: Lorraine Gilbert, photographer and professor at the University of Ottawa (Ottawa), Heather Igloliorte, artist and art historian specializing in Inuit art (Ottawa/Labrador), Rick Leong, painter (Victoria/Montreal), Sarah Maloney, sculptor (Halifax).

General Information

The Canada Council Art Bank, with approximately 17,500 works, has the largest collection of contemporary Canadian art in the world. It was created to support the efforts of Canadian visual artists and to provide government and corporate offices with the opportunity to rent Canadian art for their offices and public spaces. Since 2001, the Canada Council Art Bank has acquired close to 900 works through its purchase program. Currently, one third of the collection is on rental and displayed in office and public spaces, giving Canadians across the country access to a variety of works by Canadian artists.

My recent piece Amalgam (2011) will be shown as part of the exhibition 50 Years of Art: Looking Back at the Future, a retrospective look at the the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (TOAE) to mark its 50th anniversary.

Exhibition information from TOAE:

Over the fifty years of the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, more than 20,000 artists have shown at Nathan Phillips Square. In this unique and generous award programme, artists are selected by accomplished artist peer judges and acknowledged as “best” in their medium. Past “honourable mentions” include the young photographer Edward Burtynsky who was awarded second place in 1982.

How then to select artists to represent the more than 2,500 award winners recorded by the TOAE? Number of awards won? Artists who went on to significant careers? Representation of trends in art? High sales? Audience popularity? It’s an impossible task, but who better than curator Jennifer Rudder, a former board member, jury chair and Executive Director of the TOAE’s annual art show and sale. She has selected innovative award winning artists and makers who push the boundaries of the status quo in their work, breaking out of medium specific conventions and restrictions. Unconventional pioneers in their field, these artists have initiated shifts in the way we view art and craft in Canada today.

Launch Event: Friday, March 25th, 2011, from 7-11 pm, 2053 Gottingen St., Halifax, NS

Exhibition Duration: March 25 – April 23, 2011, 2053 Gottingen St., Halifax, NS

Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5 pm and by appointment

On March 25th, 2011, Meghan Fish Contemporary Art + Projects introduces a new way to buy and appreciate contemporary art, both in Halifax and abroad. A primarily online and by-appointment gallery space, Meghan Fish Contemporary Art + Projects will feature cutting edge painting, photography and new media work by emerging and established artists from across Canada. Collectors will be able to view the art online, by appointment locally at the Meghan Fish Contemporary Art + Projects showroom/office, or have work sent on approval to their own space. Also in the works are plans for pop-up events and exhibitions–an exciting way to showcase art in a series of changing venues around Halifax. Launching Meghan Fish Contemporary Art + Projects will be an inaugural group exhibition at 2053 Gottingen Street on Friday, March 25th, 2011, in collaboration with Jane’s on the Common, Canoe Realty, and Propeller Brewery.

“I see this as a more progressive model for selling art,” explains Director Meghan Fish (née Dorward), who has worked in Halifax’s commercial art world for the last five years (most notably as the former Assistant Director at Studio 21 Fine Art). “It circumvents the inefficiencies of maintaining a traditional gallery space year round. In my experience, I’ve found that most art-buying audiences arrive through word-of-mouth. It made me realize that I didn’t need a static, physical space to sell art. Instead, I will focus my resources and energy on personal service – offering artwork installation services and lease-to-own options to clients who purchase work, while effectively promoting my roster of artists. Pop-up exhibitions will add to this hybrid approach in creating a unique and diverse experience for the public.”

Meghan Fish Contemporary Art + Projects will carry a range of art not readily available in Halifax, such as photography and new media. “We’ll really fill a void for local collectors,” says Fish, who holds a BFA in photography and media arts from NSCAD University. She hopes to be able to inform and engage local audiences around current practices in contemporary art.

Fish expects the new gallery model to fully enable her business to utilize social media, reaching out to both national and international collectors using tools like Facebook and Twitter – all while contributing to the local art scene and promoting local artists. She hopes the pop-up exhibitions will act like art ‘happenings’–showcasing MFC artists through events in alternative venues. “We’re thinking outside the box, literally,” Fish laughs. “I plan to introduce the concept that galleries no longer have to be limited to one static set of walls on a daily basis. It’s a malleable, ever-changing, and virtual world out there now – without geographical boundaries. It’s time we embrace that in the art world.”

Meghan Fish Contemporary Art + Projects’ roster of artists includes Halifax-based artists Scott Bertram, Adrian Fish, Jessica Hein, Susan McEachern, and Chris Myhr, as well as national artists, Sarah Cale, Susan Dobson, Scott Everingham, Rafael Goldchain, Alexis Lavoie (Winner of the 2010 RBC Canadian Painting Competition) and Mark Stebbins (Honourable Mention at the 2010 RBC Canadian Painting Competition and Best in Show at the 2010 Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition).
